The Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced open Defecation free rural India in presence of 20,000 village heads at an event organized at Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat on the occasion of the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
People associated with Gandhian institutions, high court judges, Padma awardees, educationists and village-level sanitation workers also attended the function.
PM Modi said that almost 99 percent of rural India is open defecation free and informed that around 11 crore toilets built in a short period of time.
He talked about ‘Swach Bharat Mission’ and credited sanitation workers and volunteers in making it as a common topic. He said “This mission helped make the toilet, which was earlier a difficult topic, a common topic of discussion. From girls who demanded toilet before marriage to Bollywood, everyone contributed to the mission to make India open-defecation-free,”
Narendra Modi said that the World is appreciating and amazed by our efforts that we have provided toilets for 60 crore population in 60 months by constructing 11 crore toilets. He had also made this announcement from the stage of ‘Howdy Modi’ event during his recent US trip that “India will bid farewell to open defecation on 2nd October 2019.”
He discussed the success of Swach Bharat Mission and told how it created employment opportunities for 75 lakhs people especially women. He said that by 2022 ‘we have to make India free of Single-use plastic and asked people’s contribution to it.’
